American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Coimbatore Successfully treats 57-year-old with Rectal Cancer Using Neoadjuvant Radiation Therapy

Varian TrueBeam STX Linear Accelerator Enhances Treatment Precision

Coimbatore, May 20, 2024: American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Coimbatore successfully treated a 57-year-old female diagnosed with rectal cancer. Under a collaborative effort of radiation, medical, and surgical oncologists, the patient underwent radiation therapy using the Varian Truebeam STX Linear accelerator over 5 weeks, supplemented by daily oral chemotherapy tablets. The therapy, utilizing intensity-modulated radiation, minimized toxicity to surrounding organs, ensuring minimal side effects.
The patient was presented with a one-month history of rectal bleeding, causing increasing discomfort. Upon examination, a hard growth about 3 cm from the anal verge was detected, further evaluation revealed stage III disease, indicating localized cancer without spread to distant organs.
Clinical assessment two weeks post-radiation therapy displayed a notable reduction in the lesion’s size. The patient was scheduled for MRI pelvis evaluation and subsequent radical surgery for complete disease eradication. Employing neoadjuvant radiation therapy before surgery aids in tumor shrinkage, facilitates negative surgical margins, and enhances patient survival rates.
Dr Anbu C, Radiation Oncologist, AOI Coimbatore, emphasized the significance of this treatment approach, stating, “Neoadjuvant radiation therapy is instrumental in achieving a sustained treatment response and reducing the need for permanent colostomy. It not only shrinks the tumor but also enhances the success of surgical intervention, offering patients a chance for complete recovery.”
Rectal cancer develops in the rectum, which is the last part of the large intestine. The symptoms of rectal cancer may include changes in bowel habits (such as diarrhea or constipation), blood in the stool, abdominal discomfort or pain, weakness or fatigue, unintended weight loss, and a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying.
