President Murmu Lands in Suriname, Received by her Surinamese Counterpart with Full State Honours

5th June, Chennai: President Droupadi Murmu reached Suriname on Sunday on a three -day visit. She was welcomed by Suriname’s protocol chief and India’s ambassador to Suriname. The purpose of her visit is to strengthen India’s bilateral relations with the South American country. This is the President’s first State visit after assuming office in July last year.

The President is accompanied by Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Niranjan Jyoti and Member of Parliament, Rama Devi as part of the official Indian delegation. The President’s official account tweeted “President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Paramaribo, Suriname on her first State Visit as the President of India. In a special gesture, President @CSantokhi of Suriname received the President at the airport with full state honours.”

The last time an Indian President visited Suriname was in 2018. India and Suriname’s relations are friendly and have special significance due to the Indian diaspora, which is almost 27 percent of Suriname’s total population. In the second phase of her visit, President Murmu will visit Serbia from June 7. In Serbia, the President will hold a bilateral meeting with Serbian President Alexander Vusic, and will meet Prime Minister Ana Branbic, along with National Assembly President Vladimir Oralik. President Murmu will also be addressing a business program and talk to the Indian community.
