
Chennai, 07March 2020:The pioneer of pediatric cardiac surgery in India, Dr. K.M.Cherian, celebrated his 78th birthday at Frontier Lifeline premises recently. Dr Cherian is the founder of Frontier Lifeline Hospital & Dr KM Cherian Heart Foundation. A cultural programme was organised by all the staff and doctors at the hospital in Mogappair to commemorate the birthday of their beloved ‘Chief’.
A Padmashree recipient, Dr Cherian has been the Honorary Surgeon to the President of India from 1990 to 1993 and has performed 40,000+ surgeries. With innate talent and a passion to save lives, he has also pioneered the first heart transplant in India after the legislation of Brain Death, the first bilateral lung transplant, the first Pediatric Heart transplant, the first Auto transplant, and the first Heart and Lung transplant. With phenomenal experience and far-sightedness, he is the first Indian member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
Commenting on the occasion, Dr KM Cherian, said,“I am overwhelmed by the love & affection I have received from one and all for my birthday. This is like a dream come true for me. It has always been my endeavour to help people whenever possible and make a difference. I would like to thank all my colleagues, peers and critics who have helped me in this journey and encouraged me. I hope to continue doing research in medical science field in the coming years.”
