INNOVATIVE NON-SURGICAL CARDIAC TREATMENT AT MGM HEALTHCARE – TAVI cures 80-year-old of severe breathing difficulty

Chennai, December 20, 2019: MGM Healthcare, a quaternary care hospital in the heart of the city, announced today a successful non-surgical procedure called TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) on a80-year-old woman from Chennai who was suffering from severe breathing difficulty for the past two years, which had left her in an almost bed-ridden state.

The diagnosis at MGM Healthcare revealed a narrowing of the aortic valve causing aortic valve stenosis. This happens on account of the deposition of calcium in the aortic valve due to aging, resulting in less blood being pumped to other parts of the body. Normally, the treatment commonly offered in such cases is an open heart surgery to completely replace the damaged valve.

But here,  the patient preferred a non-surgical intervention. This being the scenario, Dr. Madan Mohan B., Clinical Lead & Senior Consultant, Department of Cardiology, MGM Healthcare suggested a non-surgical procedure called TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation). When the treatment plan was discussed with the patient, she readily gave her consent and on December 18, 2019, Dr. Madan and his team performed the procedure in the hospital’s state-of-the-art catherisation lab.

Explaining the procedure, Dr. Madan Mohan said, TAVI is a minimally-invasive procedure that implants a new aortic valve to take over the functions of the old and damaged valve without replacing it. As part of the procedure, a catheter is inserted into a large blood vessel in the groin or through a small incision in the chest and is run up till the heart where the new aortic valve is implanted. As it is a minimally-invasive procedure, the patient was discharged within 3 days of the procedure and has been advised to return to a normal routine with no restrictions.

The Department of Cardiology at MGM Healthcare is the country’s most comprehensive cardiac centre, it offers from simple angiogram to heart transplant and LVADs. The Department also offers the most advanced and specialised methods of minimally-invasive treatment. The hospital offers comprehensive cardiac services (invasive and non-invasive), including interventional cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, and electrophysiology, by adopting a holistic approach and customised patient care where expert cardiologists focus on the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cardiovascular diseases.
