Spin Dance Studio, renowned for popularising and providing high quality
training in new dance forms in Chennai, proudly presented their 9th annual
show on February 23rd 2020 at Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall at
7pm. Hosted by RJ Syed, who kickstarted the event by getting the audience
at the packed auditorium to dance to three popular Bollywood songs, the
show had a thrilling energy, and many enjoyable surprises.
Spin’s annual show is much-awaited in the city’s arts calendar,
as it showcases the best technically-trained young talent in the city. This
year’s edition focused on rigorous technical styles such as jazz and
ballet. To the audience’s delight, it featured exciting theatrical elements
for the first time, creating a fresh and experiential event. Notable
segments which combined dance, music and theatre seamlessly were: “Candy
World” (featuring dancers ages 3-5), “Sea World” (featuring dancers ages
6-9), the Snow White-inspired “Enchanted Forest” (featuring dancers ages
8-13) and the crowd favourite, “Around The World In 80 Steps” (6 sequences,
each highlighting an international dance style).
Speaking on the show, founder Balaji B. said, “After so many
years of providing top quality dance education and certification, we are
now excited about exploring performance itself in more ways. We believe
that theatre, music and dance are a complementary and intuitive blend, and
we have especially enjoyed encouraging our littlest students to explore
them all, through a new certified course that teaches all three.”
With students of ages between 3 ½ and 60 years old, Spin Dance Studio has
four branches in Chennai and offers courses for both kids and adults in
ballet, hip hop, contemporary, Bollywood, jazz and various other dance and
fitness forms. It also regularly holds workshops featuring celebrities, and
collaborations such as with the Shiamak Davar Dance School, Mumbai, founded
by India’s “Guru of Dance”, and Kings United. On the international front,
Spin Dance Studio is one of India’s most recognised dance training
institutes. It has the highest number of students in the country who have
been certified by the Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing,
Australia. Spin’s was the Indian team with the most number of wins at the
2019 CSTD Asia Pacific Dance Competition held in Bangkok, with over 90% of
the team members securing a trophy or medal in their respective categories.
