28-Year-Old Young Oesophageal Cancer Patient Successfully Treated at American Oncology Institute (AOI), Coimbatore

Coimbatore, 04 February, 2025: American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Coimbatore has successfully treated a 28-year-old young male diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Through the collaborative efforts of the medical and radiation oncology teams, the patient underwent Neoadjuvant Chemo-radiation therapy using the state-of-the-art Varian TrueBeam STX Linear Accelerator over a four-week period.
The Varian TrueBeam STX Linear Accelerator is a cutting-edge system designed to deliver highly precise radiation therapy. It allows for faster treatments with pinpoint accuracy, minimizing exposure to healthy tissues. The use of Image-Guided Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IGRT) further enhances precision by integrating real-time imaging during treatment, ensuring the radiation targets only the tumour while sparing surrounding organs, such as the Heart and Lungs. This advanced approach results in fewer side effects and a better overall experience for patients.
Harish Trivedi, CEO, CTSI South Asia, commended the team’s success and the advanced technology used in the treatment: “Our mission at AOI is to provide world-class care using the most advanced technologies available. The successful outcome in this case underscores our commitment to offering cutting-edge cancer treatment that enhances both survival rates and quality of life for our patients.”
The patient initially presented with a history of Dysphagia for solids and liquids for 3 weeks. CECT Thorax and PET CT scan revealed a mass in the lower oesophagus. After reviewing the case in a tumour board meeting, the team decided on a course of “Neoadjuvant Radiation along with weekly concurrent chemotherapy followed by Total Esophagectomy with gastric pull up”. Before starting radiation treatment, the medical team addressed all the concerns of the patient and family while reassuring them throughout the treatment process.
Dr Kannan Maharajan, Radiation Oncologist at AOI Coimbatore, added: “Advanced radiotherapy techniques enable us to treat cancer with fewer side effects and in a shorter duration, while achieving excellent tumour control. This is a significant improvement over conventional treatments, which were prolonged and often came with more side effects.”
The patient successfully completed his four-week radiotherapy treatment using IGRT and experienced no acute side effects. At the end of completion of RT, reassessment CECT Scan showed near-total complete response. This successful treatment exemplifies the benefits of advanced cancer care at AOI Coimbatore, bringing hope and better outcomes to patients facing challenging diagnoses.
