Indian Support to Neighbour Sri Lanka Continues, 21,000 Tonnes of Fertilisers Supplied
22nd Aug, Chennai: Since Sri Lanka moved into an economic crisis, India has made sure to support and have Colombo’s back, at every instance. The humanitarian assistance being extended by New Delhi to Colombo has been increasing with each passing month. From holding an All Parties’ Leaders Meeting on the Sri Lankan issue in July to providing more than $4 billion in assistance since January, India has been very active on the Sri Lankan matter.
Taking these initiatives and assistance forward, on Monday India further provided Sri Lanka with 21,000 tonnes of fertiliser, with the aim of ensuring food security and supporting Sri Lankan farmers. The handover to Sri Lankan authorities was done by Indian High Commissioner Gopal Bagley.
The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka tweeted, “Adding to the fragrance of friendship and cooperation. High Commissioner formally handed over 21,000 tonnes of fertilizer supplied under India’s special support to the people of Sri Lanka. This follows 44,000 tonnes supplied last month under Indian support totalling about USD 4bn in 2022”
Going forward, India plans to further its support through long term investments in Sri Lanka, especially in sectors such as renewable energy, hydrocarbons, ports and infrastructure, and IT, through public and private firms.
Such actions from the Indian side continue, in accordance to India’s Neighbourhood First Policy. New Delhi has always showcased that its neighbours will remain a priority which is visible through its commitment towards uplifting Sri Lanka and its people.
