Sumithra Devi — From Kannagi to Keerthi
Before the camera found her, Sumithra found acting on a school stage—playing Kannagi, a character whose fire, dignity and emotional strength gave her an early taste of performance.
A Visual Communication graduate from Vaishnav College, Chromepet, Sumithra brings a visual sensibility to her craft. Her training in classical dance has given her an instinctive command over movement, expression and body language. She is also widely admired within her circles for her dancing skills, with dance being one of the talents that has consistently earned her appreciation.
In Motha Raathiri, she steps into the role of Keerthi, bringing to the character a combination of natural charm and quiet confidence. Her dusky beauty gives her a distinctive screen presence—an earthy, contemporary appeal that doesn’t need excessive styling to make an impression. There is a warmth to her complexion and an understated elegance that may remind audiences of the natural screen appeal of Nandita Das and Aishwarya Rajesh. Like them, Sumithra carries her dusky beauty with authenticity, while retaining a distinct identity of her own.
But what truly sets Sumithra apart is her Tamil diction. Her pronunciation is crisp, natural and beautifully rooted, allowing even simple lines to carry personality. There is an effortless ease in the way she speaks Tamil—an increasingly rare quality on screen.
Sumithra is a great admirer of Vijay both as an actor and as a performer. His screen presence, discipline and ability to connect with audiences have made a strong impression on her and truly believes that he is a great inspiration to all the youngsters of this land.
She also looks up to Tamannaah Bhatia’s dancing, while her own classical dance background continues to influence the way she approaches performance.
Sumithra is particularly grateful to Mythri Movie Makers for creating a platform where so many new faces have been given an opportunity to be part of a single film. She believes that giving fresh talent such a significant opportunity is both encouraging and exciting, and feels fortunate to have begun her cinematic journey with Motha Raathiri.
From a schoolgirl performing Kannagi to Keerthi in Motha Raathiri, Sumithra’s journey is only beginning. With her dusky elegance, expressive face, classical dance skills and particularly strong Tamil diction, she has all the qualities to emerge as one of the film’s most noticeable discoveries.
Motha Raathiri is directed by Raja Karuppasamy and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, with Sumithra Devi L. playing an important role in the ensemble cast.
