Tamil Nadu bag silver medal in U-17 girls team championship

Delhi’s Payas Jain, West Bengal’s Munmun Kundu claims U-17 singles title

 Vadodara, January 8: Chennai paddler DK Vedhalakshmi clinched bronze medal at the UTT 65th National School Games Table Tennis Championships, under the aegis of School Games Federation of India (SGFI), after thrashing local girl Gujarat’s Aafrien Murad 11-8, 11-5, 11-6 in the U-17 girls singles third-place match at Sama Indoor Sports Stadium in Vadodara on Wednesday.

Vedhalakshmi, who came into this championships as a qualifier in singles event, was impressive in the final of U-17 girls team championships. She claimed two victories including a hard-fought 7-11, 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9 win against Munmun Kundu, who went onto win U-17 girls singles title. However, her efforts were not enough for Tamil Nadu team as they suffered 3-2 defeat against West Bengal.

Tamil Nadu also secured a bronze medal in the U-19 girls team championships with a 3-1 win over Punjab in a third-place game.

Meanwhile, National champion Payas Jain and Munmun clinched U-17 singles title. While, Delhi’s Payas overcame West Bengal’s Aniket Sen Choudhury 12-10, 9-11, 12-10, 11-7 in a hard-fought boys final, Munmun outclassed Delhi’s Vanshika Bhargava 11-7, 11-6, 11-4 in one-sided girls title clash in the competition which is jointly organised by UTT and Table Tennis Association of Baroda (TTAB).

The Championships is supported by the Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG), Gujarat State Table Tennis Association (GSTTA) and Vadodara Mahanagar Seva Sadan (VMSS). And it is sponsored by IOCL, ONGC, GAIL and GACL.
