Manali Petrochemicals switches to100% recycled wastewater in its manufacturing processes.

28nd January 2020, Chennai:Manali Petrochemicals Limited (MPL), a leading chemical manufacturing company and part of AM International, Singapore today announced switching to 100% recycled water in its manufacturing plants. With the completion of the water supply infrastructure upgradation at its plant recently, MPLwill deploy only treated tertiary sewage water across its manufacturing value-chain. The initiative is a part of the group’s triple-bottom-line strategy, which aims to conserve resources for a sustainable future.

Commending the team for its efforts, Ashwin Muthiah, Chairman, MPL and Founder Chairman, AM International,Singapore said, “At AM International, alternate energy and recyclable resources are strategic to our contribution towards a sustainable planet. The water supply infrastructure overhaul at the MPL plant is an exampleof our commitment to green manufacturing. The move contributes to the optimal utilisation of resources andmore importantly, enables the conservation of freshwater for basic human needs.”

Water is an essential raw material in chemical manufacturing – used in the production, washing and cooling systems. The plants at MPL have a combined daily requirement of around 6,000 kilolitres (KL). About 4,400 KL is used in the manufacturing process and can accommodate water with slightly high total dissolved solids (TDS) levels. This need has now beenmetby using secondary treated sewage water. The remaining 1,600 KL has to be high purity water.

To address the challenge, MPL overhauled the water supply infrastructure at its plants.

  • To meet its requirement of high TDS water with recycled wastewater, MPL replaced the pipeline of 10″ to 14″ from the Kodungaiyur (KGR) plant outlet to Plant 2, covering a total distance of 3 km. Further, to connect this line with Plant 1, MPL also converted the existing 6″ pipeline from P2 to P1 with a 10″ pipe covering another 3 km.
  • Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) propositioned to meet the plant’s freshwater requirement with high-quality tertiary treated water from the Kodungaiyur plant. To accommodate this collaboration, MPL modified its pipeline from the outlet point of CMWSSB to both its plants. The pipeline covered a combined distance of approximately 2 km.

The project was completed in 12 months. Today, MPL uses 100% recycled wastewater in its manufacturing processes.Its usage of freshwater is limited to domestic purposes and for the manufacturing of pharmaceutical-related products.
